lack of posts

Big weekend in sports:

My condolences firstly to the Hancock family and the Cardinals family, to experience one death on a team in five years is one to many, but two, I do not know how a team can come back and play baseball on Tuesday.

2007 NFL DRAFT- I hate doing draft grades for each team, and to do winners/losers because no one has played yet. That being said a couple teams that had drafts I liked were cleveland, carolina, buffalo and cincinati. Quinn and Thomas is solid, but they also will get a terrible grade next year with no number one. Carolina got the guy they wanted and got an extra second round pick. Beason, Jarrett, Kalil and Johnson is getting four guys who could start for them next year. Buffalo made up for their awful draft last year, by getting a running back in lynch who can start this season and also got Posluzny who will be a solid starting OLB before putting some pressure on J.P. with the Edwards pick. Cincinati's draft was good because they got a guy who to them at 18 with Hall and also did not draft anyone who is "expected" to be arrested. Good work guys.

Moss to patriots- Wow, I want to see the NFL analyst who does not predict them to win the super bowl come this season's predictions. They might have made the best offensive and defensive acquisitions of the offseason with Adalius Thomas and Randy Moss.

D-Jax to 49ers- all it takes to get a top notch wide receiver is a 4th rd pick. It must suck to be the Seahawks who should feel pretty stupid now for giving up their first round pick for Deion Branch who is not as good as either moss or jackson

Baseball- The Bo Sox and Mets, my teams to go to the world series, are the best teams in their respective leagues. They also make the "a good pitching staff is more important than a good group of hitters" mantra come to life. The Bo Sox have three potential 20 game winners in Dice-K, Beckett and Schilling and have Wakefield pitching solid with Lester coming back in a month. The Mets, as I said in my earlier posts, have a better pitchign staff than people will realize and they lead the league in Team ERA. Maine is a flat-out stud and Glavine is always solid. The shock has been the success of El-Duque who had an awful Spring. Then again so did Moises Alou and Shawn Green but both are hitting over .350 at the moment. Perez has been solid minus his walk-a-thon in Atlanta, and both these teams, I believe, will be replaying the Buckner 1986 World Series in October.

Hockey- I watched the entire Rangers-Sabres game and it was one of the best hockey games I have ever seen. It was like a boxing match going back and forth with oppurtunities but in the end the Rangers seemed to control both OT's and got a great shot from a solid defenseman in Roszivald and now have the oppurutuniy to hold serve and send it back to Buffalo.

Basketball- G.S., enough said. I love this story and I would sacrifice my pre-season prediction of Dallas over Chicago to see them win. They are the true underdog story and no one can tell me they dislike the Warriors. Not Possible. The Bulls look great and match up well with the Pistons. Deng is going to be a load for Tayshaun, Hinrich vs. Chauncey will be a great match-up and Hamilton vs. Gordon will be just as good as both are UCONN products. Down low it will be Ben vs. his former team, which will ignite both interior defenses. Skils vs. Saunders, this has the making of a seven game series. Suns look very solid, so do the Cavs, and so do the Nets. Houston-Utah and San Antonio-Denver is still tough to call. I expect Denver to win game four.

Big post hope to keep them coming and try and subscribe to this blog and comment, I would like to hear your thoughts, and not just give mine.

No post today as I am shocked at this Virginia Tech shooting

Sunday, April 15, 2007

No posts yesterday but we are back for a lengthy one today:

Hockey Playoffs- Last year the Western conference was upset city, with the 8 seed making it to the stanley cup. This year the Rangers looked poised to go to round two, and between the lightning, islanders and Penguins: At least one of the three is going to move on. You have got to love the play of Sean Avery. He gets under the opposing team's skin while becoming the Garden's most loved and endeared player since the first few games of Lundqvist's career last season. MSG has hear more "Avery, Avery" chants in the past three months than it did "Henrik" chants all last year. Not to mention he is a terrific offensive player and was solely responsible for his first "fluke' goal and he was the one who spotted shannahan and made him such a perfect pass that a shannahan bouncing shot made it past Hedberg the Thrasher netminder. Great game and also Sidney Crosby scoring the GWG for his team was just the first step of him rivaling Gretzky for great one status. His goal was a clinic in awareness as he was skating backwards and when he turned around, he found the puck and jammed it home.

Baseball- Mets lost to nats, nothing else to say but pathetic. Big win for the Yankes in the 13th, they needed that for their bullpen. Big game tonight for Jackie in all parks in baseball with the number 42 being worn. I understand Torii Hunter's stance with saying that with so many player swearing it, it could get "watered down" but the fact remains if a player wants to honor the man himself I have no problem showing it, just like I have no problem with Garret Anderson admitting he is not wearing #42 beacuse he is not "worthy of it."

Basketball- Thought of this last night, but doesn't it seem like every year the basketball season is a month too long in terms of people actually caring. No one cares about the last month because you are either tanking for a better lottery selection or you are one of four teams who is still in contention. I find it dumb and if they are going to keep the schedule the same length their should be less playoff teams so more teams are still competing, or give byes to the first four teams etc.

Football- Draft is coming in two weeks and at some point this week I will unveil the Julian Gompertz Mock Draft Edition 1.0. I used to mock drafts early and often but have come to realize the only time it is worth doing is now and up until the draft in the last two weeks because doing one a month ago, you would have selected Jamarcus (1) and probably Joe Thoams (2) but that is not going to be the draft order now.

More to come and LISTEN TO WRGW'S "THE HANGOVER SPECIAL" FROM 1-4PM TODAY AT GWRADIO.COM AND CLICK LISTEN LIVE. WE HAVE JERRY WALKER THE FORMER SETON HALL STANDOUT ON OUR SHOW THIS AFTERNOON. BE SURE TO LISTEN IN!!

Friday, April 13, 2007

Hockey- As a rangers fan I love our first win in ten years. Jagr's post game quote is great. "I did not want to score the first goal because we always lose when I do," it is such a good example of why Shannahan not Jagr should be wearing the C, but thats a whole other debate for another time. Big time PK by the blueshirts killing of a 6-4 for the last 1:11. Big W for the Sabres, though Wade Dublewicz came to play, and the Islanders offense did not. I like the Flames chances because they have Kirusoff in net, but once again lik the Isles they need to back him up with some goals and they did not. As for the Lightning, if you get 3 past Martin Brodeur in a playoff game, you have got to come away with the W no other way around it.

Imus axed- Good, I am glad to see him gone and I am sure he will go to Sirius or XM in the next six months, but I am more concerned with ESPN covering up Stuart Scott's remark on one of their own show's Mike and Mike in the morning where he claimed that rappers who use the word ho use it "in an affectionate way." If Scott truly believes this, than there are some major double standard issues here that need to be discussed in some type of forum. I appluad the Rutgers team for taking this all in stride and saying all the right things, it is good to know they will not be affected by Imus' remarks.

Kobe- Even 50 cannot do it against the Clips, which means I am officially not worried of them upsetting a team like the Suns or Spurs in the first round. Fact is Kobe needs another superstar forward or center on the roster to get a fourth ring. I truly believe Buss and Jackson know this and that had a lot to do with why they did not pull the trigger on the Jason Kidd deal. They know they may have a potential gem in Bynum down low and do not want to sacrifice the future for a pass first PG, when they already have a pass first point guard in smush parker who I think could score 15-17 a night on a team that is not the Lakers, and yes being at GW in the A-10 I always give my Atlantic-10 love to a guy like Smush who is from Fordham.

Nats win- but the real question is this, will they top the Mets. Here is why I tink they can:
1. Manny Acta was an awful choice for manager despite what everyone believes. I did not believe he was a competent third base coach and I also know he should have become a bench coach under a guy like Willie Randolph before trying to do his own thing in D.C.

2. They play the Mets, Braves, Phillies and Marlins 19 times each. They will lose 15 to both the Mets and Braves and 13 to the Phillies and Marlins. Thatsonly twenty wins right there. They still need thirty more and their interleague schedule has Minnesota, Baltimore, Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland. They will lose all five of those series.

In any event more on this as it unfolds.

Mets- Big W as well as Glavine outduels Moyer in the AARP game.

Will be back for the weekend enjoy the hockey plaoffs....oh wait thats right they are on TSN, CBC, VERSUS

Thursday, April 12, 2007

King Felix- Wow, what a performance, love the story of how he came into camp looking slim and the whole organization was on the phone with each other asking if they had seen what hernandez looked like. Lost in this is that Matsuzaka is going to be a very good pitcher as well as he is not easily rattled by the big pressure situations. I still want to see him vs. the yankees before I am totally sold but he has got some filthy stuff.

NFL schedule- I will admit I like looking at who my team is playing, but have we taken it too far when ESPN is running a special on "schedule release day" as they are calling it. I think it is way to premature. I liked when they started doing the On the Clock segments because we had some experts giving us their take on the draft, but predicting the best matchups? Not buying what they are selling.

Metropolitan Meltdown- Yes I watched and saw first hand what was the demolition of Oliver Perez. After dominating the Braves last week he and John Maine, to a lesser extent, had a bit of a breakdown against the Phillies. I will say this, as bad as it was for the Mets they only lost 5-2. I will also say this: Paul Loduca knows how to protect his pitchers. A disgruntled Loduca said after the game: "You guys are going to write about how bad the pitching is, but why don't you write about the fact our bats are cold...umm no paul the mets lead the nl in runs and second in avg. Sorry not buying it

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Dice-K vs. Ichiro- The Japanese invasion begins. I would be surprised if Dice-k doesnt win 16 games or more this year and I would also be surprised if Ichiro strikes out three times in a game ever again this season.

D'backs- they are off to a hot start and have a lot of young talent, but I am not buying the pitching or the bullpen.

Nationals- they are off to an awful start and 50 wins could be a real stretch, and being in D.C. I can tell you there has never been less publicity for a baseball team. It is Zimmerman and a heap of garbage.

A-Rod- Give it two weeks and the fans will be booing him again, he is in a zone, congrats on peaking early, it will only make the decision to jump ship easier when he hits .230 in the months of August and September

Afflalo going to pros- more importantly Hansbrough, Ellison and Lawson all staying meaning UNC is my early pick to win it all now that Julian Wright is leaving Kansas.

internet has been down for me using a spare eternet cord so will do my best to keep track

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Don Imus is an idiot, first and formost. He puts himself on a pedestal like he can say the things he does without being reprimanded more severely than a measley two week suspension that will not take back the racial prejudcies he instilled to the hundreds of listeners that will be listening to him when the suspension is over. Too many people have too many thoughts on this, but if you are that popular, and you are a public figure, make sure you realize everything you say puts you in either a positive or negative light and becasue of your "influence" you are put to a higher standard than an average person on a radio station, like yours truly who is on Half Jewish sports on WRGW on Thursdays from 4-6PM. Go to gwradio.com and click listen live. (Gotta love the shameless plug)

KD- going to the draft and boy oh boy is one team going to feel stupid if they leave this guy on the board for the no. 2 team. While I agree a lot of teams could use an athletic center who has freakish talent like Oden does, think about the most succesful teams in the NBA: Dallas, Phoenix, San Antonio, Detroit. What do these teams have in common: A big man who can shoot or a forward who can shoot and has "outside the paint" range: Nowitzki, Marion, Duncan, Wallace. The Mavs' and the Suns' uptempo offense is better suited for athletic seven footers who have lights out range, and even in SA and DET is a player like Durant going to be more valuable because he has the ability to develop a post game, yet already can hit NBA range three's. Anyone who puts up 37 and 23 in a college game against a Bobby Knight coached team should automatically be the number one pick in the draft if he is available. Nothing else too it.

Tiger losing- Yes the 10 of you who read this are probably laughing at me for predicting Tiger's 5th Masters victory would come this weekend, but I stand by the pick. Tiger was not himself, shot awfully and still came in second place in one of the four majors in golf. It is not any less of an accomplishment because Zach Johnson beat him, but I hate taking away credit from a man who so eloquently averted any major damage and played consistent golf in conditions that asked simply that you play Even par and Johnson did just that, hats off to being able to withstand the Tiger surge that never came. I was impressed.

More tomorrow, thanks for waiting and subscribe and comment please as always.

So Tiger did not win the masters and the Mets do not have the best record in baseball, this is why this site is designed simply for me to talk big like I have a clue, but in actualiy I do not know anymore than you. I just use the cyberspace to admit I love writing and talking sports at any time of day and hope you all do too.

Something I noticed while watching the Red Sox vs. Rangers game. Jason Varitek's bat speed travels slower than most senior citizens in their buick's, yet he must be in the lineup every game except wakefield's start for what he does behind the plate. When papelbon came into the game, Tek would stare at the batters face and simultaneoulsy put fingers down to indicate what pitch he wanted paps to throw. He was in essence reading the reaction of the hitter's face and deciding which pitch he felt the batter would least likely presume was on the way, and 15 pitches and five outs later the Red Sox had escaped a bases loaded no outs jam created by future AAA bench warmer Joel Pineiro.

Top 3 NL Teams:

1. Atlanta Braves- I cannot put the Mets over the Braves when the dirty dirty took 2-3 from the queens kids, yet ask most people around the game and they will tell you the Mets scare them more than Atlanta. The braves though, can be the second best team in the division if they get good pitching from Smoltz, Hudson, James, redman and Davies which is not unlikely. Soriano is a gem out of the pen, and Seattle looks dumber and dumber each day for giving him away for another future AAA bench warmer horacio ramirez. Andruw is going to hit in a contract year, McCann is the real deal, Francouer has never seen a pitch he does not like, but he seems to find more and more clutch hits than I can remember. He had 7 rbis in the 7th inning or later in games last season tying him for the most in the National League.

2. New York Mets- They should be number one if Willie had let El Duque go one more inning instead of pinch hitting him in the sixth for Julio Franco. Reyes is electric, Loduca has been lightning hot and the mets defense and pitching has been the biggest key to their early success which is scary when you consider how good their offense is.

3. San Diego Padres- They have taken 2-3 from division foes Colorado and San Francisco and have a top 3 staff of Peavy, Young and Maddux which features two potential cy youngs and a veteran pitcher who has over 300 career wins. They also have a solid core of hitters and a bullpen with scott linebrink, cla meredith and Trevor Hoffman

Top 3 AL Teams:

1. LA Angels- I was opposed to all the "trendy" LAA OVER LAD world series picks by many of the nation's best baseball writers yet one half of that equation has held up its end of the bargain. My AL MVP Vladimir Guerrero has been hitting the cover off the ball, Howie and Gary have gotten the job done at the top of the order and garett anderson and the prospects have filled in to create what could become the most potent team in the league. Combined with two dominant righties in Lackey and Santana, and Jered Weaver coming back and this team with K-rod and Shields in the Pen could be going back to the W.S. for the first time since 2002

2. Minnesota- My team pegged for less than 75 teams has found away to stay afloat even with just one very very competent starting pitcher a very god closer and two very good bats. Boof Bonser, Ramon Ortiz and Calros Silva handed in their first start with no one allowing more than three earned runs. How long will this last, not very long.

3. Boston Red Sox- Yes they are only .500 and I might be picking the Tigers, Indians or Mariners if it were not for snow outs or rain outs but the fact remains this team has three SP who could conceivably win twenty games and are going to get mike timlin and jon lester back off the DL in the next month. Ortiz regained his power stroke, Manny will come together and I will say it now and say it often, Jon Papelbon looks absolutely unhittable in the final inning (8th tonight as well) after his latest 15 pitch five out performance makes the term unhittable a criticism when using it to describe Paps. His Fastball was hitting 97 and hitters had no ide whether it was going to be the fastball painting the corners or the Splitter going 89 that looks like a replica fastball only it sinks like a guided missile right before it gets to the plate. It made Mike Young, Mark Teixeira, Hank Blalock and Brad Wilkerson look like the nerdy kid with glasses and curly hair who bats last on your little league team.

Have a good day and Happy belated Easter to all. Hockey playoffs coming up this week as well as Dice-k mania on wednesday. Stay tuned, subscribe and comment on the blog as well please. I would love to hear your voice.
Busy day but a quick check-up

Tiger- As advertised will be the 2007 Masters Champion

Mets- Will have the best record in baseball when the first week is over

NHL- Islanders win and their in at the 8 spot, if not its Toronto and the Sabres round one

NBA- Great ending for the Knicks Bucks game, Isiah claimed he always wanted to run a play where he gets Eddy Curry a three, and this is the guy the knicks want in the future coaching them

Cleveland vs. Seattle- SNOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Congrats to MSU on the frozen four

More this week and enjoy Sopranos and Entourage tonight, what a night. You better believe it is not TV IT IS HBO!

Tiger: is already on the comeback trail going -1 thru three today. He is just four strokes off the lead right now and something tells me he will be in contention for the final 18 tomorrow. Vijay Singh is quietly putting himself in position to be atop the leaderboard at Augusta as well.

NYY: The Yanks could be the New York team that people said would have pitching problems as they are going to have to win a lot of high scoring ball games to be succesful. I am not a Kei Igawa fan and I do ont believe Pavano can succeed in the majors this season. Mussina got hit hard and Pettite was not much better as neither pitcher got out of the fifth inning. With a bullpen that has just one or two reliable arms in front of Mariano, this Yankees team could need a career year from A-rod, Giambi, Abreu, and Matsui to have any chance of competing with the Red Sox this season.

Mets are 4-0 and as Dan Shanoff said this morning, they look like a team on a mission. Thank the schedule gods for starting this season against the team that eliminated them as Willie might not admit it but that juiced them eup (No PUN intended) to start the year after an awful spring.

In the AL Vladimir Guerrero was my MVP choice for the league and so far he has validated my selection. That team has a lot of young talent and they can be a major force come playoff time.

Will be back with more later.

Gillespie to Kentucky- Well that did not take long and I am curious to know how angry A&M people must be seeing as he did promise he would be staying in College Station. Here is something I do not get; WHY WOULD A&M LET HIM TLAK TO KENTUCKY. THEY HAD THE RIGHT TO SAY NO THANKS WE WANT HIM TO STAY AND CONTINUE REBUILDING WHAT WAS AN AWFUL PROGRAM JUST THREE-FOUR YEARS AGO, BUT KNOW THEY LET HIM GET AWAY!!!!

Dice K: lived up to the hype-A. Could not resist. He was stellar but again it is the Royals so let me see what happens when he plays the Yankees in the Bronx or even at Fenway against an improved Mariner team next wednesday. Nonetheless after one game the 6 yrs for 103 mil look like a decent investment when you consider the amount of money dished out to other average pitchers.

Tiger: After a sub-par day one he has regressed even more on day two. Have we not learned by now that Tiger is trying to create a larger margin between him and the leader so his sunday afternoon back nine performance can be that much more impressive when he comes back to win the Masters. Been here done that. And while I have your attention with golf how about Phil Mickelson. I am determined to beieve his struggle stems from his lack of Ford apparel and expect him to bust out with the motto on his shirt Sunday with a polo shirt that says "built Ford tough" on the back.

Carr: He is a panther, and I presume he will be the starter there before week 7. Delhomme struggled mightily last year and has never been ever to "delhomme" quite like Boomer has wanted.

Keep it here for more blog stuff and do not be afriad to comment or subscribe to this blog. I am interested to hear how this emperiment is going and If people actually read this or even better: Enjoy reading this?

Donovan, baseball and half jewish today

Breaking News: Donovan shocks most, including myself, by deciding to stay with Florida. I understand that Jeremy Foley is a superb Athletic Dirctor and there is something to be said for building a legacy in Gainesville, but he had a chance to be one of the greatest ever if he could revitalize what is currently a stagnant Kentucky Basketball program. My only question is does Billy Donovan know something about the future of his talented starting five that we do not. More to come on this.

Listen to Half Jewish Sports Today from 4-6PM by going to gwradio.com and clicking listen live at the top of the page. We Will be having the coach of the South African WBC team and a member of the Oakland Athletics scotuing department Rick Manyante.

I could not be more please with all the Eddie Robinson coverage though I will admit my youth never allowed me to understand how truly influential he was for many in the south who wanted a better life and used football as their outlet.

Someone forgot to send the New York Mets a memo that their starting pitching is their weak spot. Once again too many analysts with not enough to say so they all love to repeat the same thing; the mets have weak pitching and yes I realize it is three games into the season, but mark my words this pitching staff is going to be better than anyone presumed. I see 15 wins from both Glavine and Maine, 13 form both Perez and Hernandez, 10 from Pelfrey and 5-6 from Pedro when he returns.

As for my picks, I hope you all enjoy them and yes they were made last Friday and I had not posted them until two games into the season. I think the Cardinals getting beat bad is going to be more of a recurring theme than I presumed and the Rangers will finish in last place, their pitching is that bad.

Bonds hits 735, nice work but the team lost the game which is more important to me, and am I the only one who is sick of people trying to guess the date of when Bonds breaks Aaron's record. As I say this I am sure Vegas is having a ball with this "date-guessing" I am calling it for the Bonds chase. Not even Bonds will call it a chase claiming he needs to hit 750 before it can be "Called a chase."

Back for more tomorrow. Enjoy your days and listen to Half Jewish

Quick baseball hits:

AL EAST: looks like the Yanks are going to be winning a lot of 9-5, 10-7, 11-9 ball-games this season with a lackluster starting pitching rotation and a bullpen that has Proctor, Rivera and Farnsworth on occasion. The bats for that lineup are going to hit and when your eight hitter was a contender for the AL batting title, the batting order is going to produce runs. Boston lost to KC, look for Beckett to rebound, Blue-Jays are overrated, Orioles lack the pitching depth and the Devil Rays are at least two years away which we seem to say every year.

AL CENTRAL: Grady Sizemore is going to be a super-star on and off the field, Jose Contreras is far from the pitcher he was when he won 17 straight ball games last season, the Tigers have the talent but need their veteran ace to stabilize a young and talented pitching nucleus, the Twins have started hot but how long can you go with four very good baseball players, I will say it now and I will say it again I do not see that team winning more than 70-73 games, and they will compete with KC for the cellar of the Central.

AL WEST- Love the Angles, problem is so does everyone else, Vlad is going to produce, and they have to many young players to not win this division, Oakland lacks the hitting and is a bit shallow in the bullpen, the Mariners have a nice core with Felix, Putz, Ichiro, and Sexson but they are going to regret not having Gil Meche in their rotation who will surprise many with his success in KC. The Rangers are a lost cause and with no pitching as usual other than Otsuka in the pen this team can go nowhere.

NL EAST: Mets look sharp, two team games with superb starting pitching. I will say this over and over but the Mets pitching is going to be a lot better than people will give it credit for. Glavine and Duque manage games, Maine and Perez have the tools to be special and Pelfrey is a filler until Pedro returns in full form, meanwhile this lineup will keep them afloat and most likely atop the East. Myers looked good for Philly but I am wondering whether or not Billy Wagner should come out and remind Met fans not to let any Phillies fans into Shea for the home opener. Braves have an improved bullpen but I am not as high on Tim Hudson as others are, and Mike Hampton is not the answer. Marlins are young and will regress with the loss og Girardi and the Nationals are years away form even being a .500 baseball club

NL CENTRAL: Cards have lost two and if you have not looked, this lineup does not scare anyone. Pujols has no protection and even with encarnacion hurt this lineup is a bunch of washed up old timers who have lost a step (Rolen, Edmonds, Wilson, Kennedy etc.) The Cubs can hit but if Zambrano is not a 20 game winner this teams chances of winning the division are slim, almsot as slim as the wallet of Jim Hendry after his offseason splurge on all hitting available and Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis. Brewers could be good if Ben Sheets is healthy but they lack the middle of the order guys to sustain success for 162 games, and the Astros do not have the pitching and have no bullpen relegating them to a bottom feeder in the division with Cinncy and Pittsburgh

NL WEST: The Padres sport a 1-3 rotation featuring Peavy, Young and Maddux and combine that with up and coming sluggers in Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Kouzmanoff and reliable hitters Marcus Giles, Brian Giles and Mike Cameron. The Dodgers are solid but with no 30 HR guy and 3 SP who I believe all will falter in Penny, Schmidt, and Lowe. Chad Billingsley must be a starter and not Brett Tomko but for any expert picking this team to the world Series remember that Grady Little manages them. While most experts are on the Diamondbacks bandwagon I like the more experienced young players in Colorado. Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins are gamers and with Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitski, Chris Ianetta as well as Brad Hawpe and Willy Taveras the pieces are there for them to be solid and with Francis and Cook anchoring the staff they could surprise some people. Expect the washed up Giants and Barry Zito as well as the inexperienced D'Backs to round out the Central.

my predictions which have been submitted are coming later this week.
